Welcome to my virtual abode!

My name is Martin Swobodzinski and I am a behavioral geographer and geographic information scientist.

I hold a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara and San Diego State University (Joint Doctoral Program). I also have a five-year degree (Diplom) in Geoinformatics from the University of Münster in Germany. A copy of my CV can usually be found under the research tab.

I was born in Poland and grew up in Germany. A few months before my third birthday (after years of filing petitions and a month-long delay due to the declaration of martial law), my family left behind then-socialist Poland to seek new opportunities in yet-to-be-reunited democratic West Germany. The emigration was possible due to my grandfather having been German.

I have a passion for the outdoors, coffee, food, movies, sports, music, and the arts. Backpacking in remote places is one of my favorite ways to unplug. If I had to choose between the sea and the desert, I would pick the desert.
